You missed the season’s first café scientifique? No problem! Here is a summary with photos from the evening. You can also take a look at our experts’ videos and presentations.
On October 18, 2010, in a crowded room at O Patro Vys, over 70 people attended the event to hear IRCM experts discuss the topics of pre-menopause and the related risk of diabetes.
Pre-menopause: a risk period for developing diabetes?
This season's first café was hosted by Louise Lambert-Lagacé, a well-known nutritionist and author of several books on nutrition and menopause. The evening began with a presentation by Dr. Rémi Rabasa-Lhoret, endocrinologist and Director of the Metabolic Diseases research unit and the research platform on obesity, metabolism and diabetes (PROMD) at the IRCM. He explained the existing links between the period of pre-menopause and the risks of developing type-2 diabetes.
Is it necessary to change your eating habits?
Then, Sonia Fortin, nutritionist and research coordinator at the IRCM, shared helpful nutritional tips to help improve eating habits and women’s condition during pre-menopause. She mentions the importance of favouring low caloric-density foods that are rich in fibre, and of increasing calcium and vitamin D intake.
How to become and remain active?
Le café concluded with a presentation by Philippe Briand, kinesiologist at the IRCM, which included studies showing the benefits of increased physical activity on the incidence of diabetes. He recommended a level of physical activity reaching 1,000 kcal per week, and suggestions certain physical activities to reduce bone loss that often occurs during menopause.
