My blood pressure and I
What is high blood pressure and how can we prevent it? IRCM experts tackled the following issues:
- What is blood pressure? Why is it important to treat and control one's blood pressure?
- What role do our blood vessels play in blood pressure? How do they react to changes in our blood pressure?
- What are the ill effects of salt on blood pressure? How can I make wise decisions when going to a restaurant?
- What are the effects of physical exercise on blood pressure? Which physical activities should I favour if my blood pressure is high?
Here is a summary of the evening, which was hosted by Véronique Perrault, the expert kinesiologist for the three cafés scientifiques of the 2009-2010 season. More than 70 people crowded the O Patro Vys on February 7, 2011, to discuss high blood pressure with IRCM experts.
Blood vessels and blood pressure: more than just pipes
Le café began with a presentation by Dr. Jean-Philippe Gratton, Director of the Endothelial Cell Biology research unit at the Institut. He explained the relationship between our blood vessels and blood pressure, as well as how our vessels react to an increase in that pressure.
High blood pressure is a silent killer. Do you frequently measure your blood pressure?
Then, Dr. Pierre Larochelle, Director of the IRCM Clinic and Director of the Cardiovascular Pharmacology research unit at the IRCM, defined high blood pressure and described how we can all measure our own blood pressure. He demonstrated how various activities affect our blood pressure and how hypertension can lead to serious health issues.
Nutrition and high blood pressure
Chantal Blais, nutritionist and head of the Nutrition Department at the IRCM Clinic, followed with a presentation focused on our overconsumption of salt. She took a look at sodium recommendations and offered personal solutions to reduce the intake of salt in our daily lives.
Physical activity and high blood pressure: which activities should I focus on?
A presentation by Philippe Briand, kinesiologist at the IRCM, concluded the café. He explained the mechanisms influencing blood pressure as well as the effects a training program can have on our blood pressure. He recommended a level of physical activity reaching 200 to 300 minutes per week, and confirmed that we should focus on cardiovascular exercises, fitness and relaxation.
Can we prevent high blood pressure?
Each IRCM experts repeated that hypertension is a multifactorial health condition, meaning that many factors can have an effect on the control of blood pressure. They also stated that it is possible to prevent high blood pressure by managing our lifestyle: weight loss, decrease in salt and alcohol intake, quitting smoking, and increase in physical activity.
