Allergic reactions, respiratory tract diseases and autoimmune diseases are growing problems in our society. The resurgence of infectious diseases thought to have been eradicated and the emergence of new viruses require major research efforts in the field of immune system diseases.
The topics addressed in this research program reflect the expertise of its fundamental researchers. In the area of viral infections, the IRCM continues to focus on two extremely important pathogenic agents: the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, and the human papilloma virus (HPV), which plays a role in cervical cancer. Research on HPV is clearly linked to activities in the cancer research program, and collaborations in this area are ongoing.
