Cholesterol: Your body needs some! IRCM specialists have their say Here’s a summary of our third Café in words and pictures – almost as good as being there. On Monday, March 22, more than 70 people attended the IRCM’s third Café. The topic of the day was cholesterol. Today, one in 275 people in Quebec suffers from familial hypercholesterolemia, and 41% of adult Canadians have high cholesterol.
The panel was again moderated by Louise Lambert-Lagacé, the high-profile nutrition expert. The session began with a presentation by Dr. Nabil G. Seidah, who discussed major research on cholesterol, specifically projects at the IRCM, including research on how the PCSK9 protein affects LDL cholesterol. This project, currently in clinical trials, may lead to the development of a new medication.
Dr. Robert Dufour explained how doctors decide whether a patient requires treatment, and if so, what kind. He also discussed how having high LDL increases the risk of cardiovascular events.
Nutritionist Chantal Blais and kinesiologist Véronique Perrault shared some strategies for controlling cholesterol through nutrition and provided some tips on how physical activity can help to bring down cholesterol rates.
The session wound up with a question period that showed the high level of interest the audience had in this important topic.
This is the third and last session in the current series of Cafés scientifiques organized by the IRCM.
