Hypertension… A silent killer! IRCM specialists warn us.
Here is a summary of our second cafe scientifique in words and pictures. Enjoy!
On Monday January 18th, on the occasion of the second cafe scientifique of the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal (IRCM), some 70 people showed up to hear IRCM specialists talk on the topic of hypertension, a disease afflicting over 5 million people in Canada.
Louise Lambert-Lagacé, a nutrition specialist well-known of the public at large, acted as the event’s facilitator. The event began with Dr. Pierre Larochelle, reputed worldwide as a hypertension specialist. He discussed the various effects hypertension has on cardiovascular diseases and how they affect those who live with the disease. Hypertension is the first cause of stroke. “Controlling one’s blood pressure is very important and it is recommended to have it measured on a regular basis by a physician, at a drugstore or at home with one’s own device,” mentioned Dr. Larochelle.
Dr. Timothy L. Reudelhuber, a renowned researcher and world expert on hypertension hormonal causes, explained the beneficial as well as the harmful effects hormones have on your organism. He insisted especially on the hormones causing hypertension. “Before, hypertension was a disease with mysterious causes. Since the 1950s, studies on hormones causing hypertension have allowed us to better understand their impacts on the disease. At the IRCM, we are currently seeking ways to reduce the risks of recurrence in hypertensive patients who already had a heart attack.” added Dr. Reudelhuber.
Furthermore, “having a big heart is not always a good thing,” stated soon after Dr. Christian F. Deschepper. The reputed physician and researcher presented in those terms the research performed in his laboratory that shows that a big heart increases the risk of developing hypertension-related problems.
Finally, Chantal Blais, a dietician, and Véronique Perrault, a kinesiologist, explained different nutritional strategies to control one’s hypertension, on the one hand, and offered various pieces of advice on the type of physical activity hypertensive people should do according to their hypertension level, on the other hand.
The event ended up with a question period that was greatly appreciated by the participants.
This cafe scientifique was funded in part by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). “I am very pleased that the CIHR have joined us in organizing this second cafe scientifique. The CIHR are major partners for the Institute and its researchers ever since they were created,” mentioned the host of the evening, Dr. Tarik Möröy, President and Scientific Director of the IRCM.
