The Cellular Neurobiology Laboratory is interested in understanding the process of neural cell fate determination, both at the cellular and molecular levels. To address this problem, we use the vertebrate retina as a model system. Neural stem cells provide a promising new avenue for generating new neural cells, either after injury or in degenerative conditions. We hope that our studies, focusing on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of cell-fate decisions during normal development will provide the required knowledge to manipulate neural stem cells to reconstruct damaged areas of the nervous system.
