Job Description

Under the direction of the veterinary director and the person responsible for the animal service department, performs tasks related to animal health and technical procedures related to the care and use of animals. Provides veterinary care as recommended by the veterinarian and animal health technicians. Performs treatments and administers medications as needed. Collection of samples. Keep records and records. Maintains equipment.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Performs technical tasks related to the care and maintenance of animals.
  • Examines and monitors the health of animals.
  • Acts as a resource person, supports the animal health technician and the person responsible for animal facilities.
  • Management of mouse colonies (raising, identifying and separating animals).
  • If necessary, perform basic techniques such as blood tests, gavages, and injections.
  • Perform animal euthanasia according to CCAC guidelines.
  • Maintains animal records.
  • If necessary, place new animals in their respective rooms upon arrival.
  • Change the cages as needed.
  • Provides food and water for the animals.
  • Ensures the comfort, health and well-being of animals.
  • If necessary, cleans, disinfects and autoclaves the cages; washes bottles and other accessories.
  • If necessary, fill the cages and prepare the material.
  • If necessary, start the cage washer according to the distribution of tasks assigned to it.
  • In collaboration with the animal care attendant, ensures the general maintenance of the accommodation premises and ensures that all the equipment is available for the proper functioning of the room.
  • Complete the information related to the maintenance of the room and collect the temperature and humidity data in the register dedicated to the accommodation room.
  • Immediately inform the person in charge of the animal facilities of any anomalies.
  • Ensures that all personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, shoe covers and gowns are available.
  • Read the animal use protocols.
  • Performs technical tasks related to the care and maintenance of animals.
  • Discuss diagnosis and treatment with animal health technicians and veterinarian.
  • Administers medications and treatments as recommended.
  • Ensures compliance with safety rules when using the equipment. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.

Education / Professional Experience and Skill

  • MANDATORY: BAC in biology or other diploma relevant to the care of laboratory animals
  • Very good organizational skills and good communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team, demonstrate availability, versatility and flexibility
  • Ability to easily perform standard techniques on rodents
  • Ability to meet deadlines and speed in carrying out tasks
  • Experience working in a research animal facility would be a definite asset
  • Functional bilingualism

Working conditions

  • Full-time position (36.25 hours / week). Competitive conditions and wages based on experience.
