Two IRCM researchers awarded NSERC grants

Two IRCM researchers stood out in the 2020 competition of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC):

Marlene Oeffinger is Associate Research Professor and Director of the Research Unit in Ribonucleoprotein Biochemistry at the IRCM, in addition to being an Associate Research Professor at Université de Montréal and Adjunct Professor at McGill University. She received a Discovery Grant of $ 42,000 per year over 5 years, for a total of $ 210,000, to determine the spatial arrangement, stoichiometry and the specificity of the substrate for messenger RNA-binding proteins in the pathways. expression of genes. She also obtained funding of $ 40,000 per year over 3 years, for a total of $ 120,000 from the Discovery Accelerator Supplements Program (SAD), for the same project.

Yvan Guindon is a Full Research Professor and Director of the Research Unit in Bioorganic Chemistry at the IRCM, in addition to being a Full Research Professor at Université de Montréal and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Ottawa. He received a Discovery Grant of $ 36,000 per year over 5 years, for a total of $ 180,000, to study the reaction mechanisms and methodology for the design and synthesis of bioactive agents.

The NSERC will contribute a total of nearly $ 500 million through the Discovery Grants Program to approximately 2,400 researchers who work across Canada in various disciplines in the natural sciences and engineering, including biology, mathematics and statistics, computer science and artificial intelligence as well as chemistry and chemical engineering. The funds will also be used to support more than 500 early career researchers who will bring new perspectives and new ideas to their field, enabling them to become the research leaders of tomorrow. The SAD program aims to provide significant additional resources in a timely manner to accelerate progress and maximize the benefits of outstanding research programs. In 2020, NSERC will grant $ 15.24 million to 127 researchers.

The IRCM community congratulates these two researchers and wishes them success in their research!
