Position Overview
Reporting to the Security Coordinator, the Security Guard is responsible for monitoring and controlling access systems, overseeing equipment, and handling fire alarms and emergency situations within the Institute. The incumbent plays a key role in maintaining the safety of the facilities while providing customer service and managing access for employees, visitors, and external contractors. The guard is also responsible for maintaining order, including physical intervention if necessary.
Job Duties
- Access Monitoring and Security Systems Management
- Oversee access and surveillance systems, including freezers, sensitive equipment, and security cameras.
- Register external companies during work periods.
- Perform regular security rounds inside and outside the facility.
- Fire Alarm and Emergency Management
- Relay information in the event of alarms or malfunctions to on-call supervisors and notify emergency services.
- Provide information and write concise reports on emergency situations.
- Customer Service and Communication
- Respond to emergencies (fire, alarms, accidents) following established procedures.
- Provide information to employees and visitors, both in person and over the phone, making the security desk a central point of reference for the Institute.
- Observe user behavior and report any anomalies to the appropriate authorities.
- Access Management
- Ensure proper use of access cards.
- Issue temporary access cards as authorized by relevant departments.
- Escort and Security Checks
- Escort users, including visitors and external contractors, within secured areas of the facility, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
- Conduct visual or physical security checks of personal property (bags, equipment) at entry or exit points of secured areas, in accordance with safety procedures.
- Participate in regular training on new security technologies and emergency protocols, and contribute to the continuous improvement of security practices at the Institute.
- Collaborate with research teams to ensure the security of restricted areas and sensitive equipment.
Requirements
- High school diploma (DES) or equivalent.
- Minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience within the last five (5) years.
- Holder of a valid BSP (Bureau de la sécurité privée) permit.
- Availability for night and weekend shifts.
- Proficiency with common office software, including Excel and Outlook.
- Fluency in French, both spoken and written.
Knowledge and Skills
- Familiarity with surveillance and access control systems.
- Knowledge of fire safety systems.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and respond effectively to emergencies.
- Strong communication and customer service skills; ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders to ensure effective security management.
- Autonomy, rigor, and responsiveness, with problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Strong sense of responsibility, with the ability to manage emergencies and follow safety procedures.
- Proactive approach, adaptable to a constantly evolving environment, and ability to contribute to improved security practices.
Work Schedule
This posting is for a night and weekend position. The regular shift schedule is from Friday evening (10:30 p.m.) to Tuesday morning (6:30 a.m.). However, the successful candidate should be available for variable shifts as needed.
