Brief resumé of presentation
Overconsumption of energy-dense, rich in lipids foods promotes the development of obesity, diabetes and atherosclerosis. Moreover, energy-dense diets increase incidents of inflammatory disorders and are a significant risk factor for the development of multiple cancers. Our efforts focus on identification of a complex signaling networks regulating lipid absorption in the intestine as well as the storage and release of triglycerides from the adipose tissue. We are also defining their role in the development of metabolic diseseases.

Short biography
Grzegorz Sumara is a leader of the Dioscuri Center for Metabolic Diseases at the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS since 2020. He started his research carrier with undergraduate student internships at the Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP), Vienna, Austria, and at the University Hospital of Zürich, Switzerland. Grzegorz received his Ph.D. from the University of Zurich and the ETH Zurich. Afterward, he spent 4 years as a postdoctoral HFSP fellow at Columbia University in New York and half a year at the IGBMC in Strasbourg. In 2013, he became junior group leader at the Rudolf Virchow Centre in Würzburg, Germany. He received the prestigious Emmy Noether grant from the German Research Foundation to study hormonally-induced signaling cascades in adipocytes and hepatocytes as well as an ERC Starting Grant, under which he established Protein kinase D (PKD) family members as crucial regulators of energy metabolism. He also explored complex signaling networks regulating adipocyte function in response to hormonal and environmental changes. In his Dioscuri Centre of Scientific Excellence in Warsaw, his research group focuses on unraveling the cross-talk of different signaling molecules in the regulation of adipocytes, enterocytes, hepatocytes, and pancreatic β cells function during metabolic diseases.
