About this conference:
The neuromodulators dopamine (DA) and acetylcholine (ACh) are potent regulators of behavior and have accordingly been implicated in many neuropsychiatric disorders. An important site of action for DA and ACh within the mammalian brain is the striatum, which is almost entirely composed of neurons co-expressing G protein-coupled receptors for both modulators that engage different (and sometimes antagonistic) signaling cascades. Despite this apparent convergence, the effects of DA and ACh on neural activity are often studied separately, leaving their likely cooperation in supporting brain function and dysfunction largely unexplored. I will describe our recent attempts to reveal the dynamics of extracellular DA and ACh in the striatum of mice in vivo and the mechanisms that underlie their coordination using a combination of optical, electrophysiological, molecular and genetic approaches, and will discuss the implications of our work for our understanding of how the brain motivates action and promotes learning from within.
