About Daniel Douek
Dr. Daniel Douek is a Senior Investigator and Chief of the Human Immunology Section at the Vaccine Research Center of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health. He is also Chief of the Genome Analysis Core and Director of the PREMISE pandemic preparedness program. He also holds the position of Adjunct Professor at the Department of Pathology of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Douek studies the processes that determine the course of human infectious diseases in which the immune system plays a central role in their pathogenesis and outcome. These include HIV, SARS-CoV-2 and other diseases of pandemic potential. His particular interests lie in inflammation and immune reconstitution, the microbiome and mucosal immunology, antigen-specific adaptive immune responses, and host genetic factors of disease susceptibility and progression. He aims to use the knowledge gained to develop new therapeutic and vaccine approaches. In 2021, Dr. Douek launched the PREMISE pandemic preparedness initiative at the Vaccine Research Center. His work has been published in close to 400 peer-reviewed papers, in several high-impact journals. He has been in the top 1% most-cited researchers in their respective fields since 2014 and has an h-index of 100.
Dr. Douek has received several prestigious distinctions over the years. In 2005, he was named one of the Scientific American 50, an award that honors 50 individuals and organizations whose accomplishments in research and other areas demonstrate outstanding scientific and technological leadership that improves the way we live and offers the greatest hope for the future. The magazine’s board of editors selected Dr. Douek for his contributions in clarifying how HIV infection causes disease and mortality. He was given the World AIDS day Award in 2007 and was named as one of the POZ 100 in 2012, an elite group of scientists, researchers, advocates, politicians and celebrities who are recognized by POZ Magazine for their significant contributions to speeding up the end of AIDS.
