The Director of the Pragmatic Health Ethics Research Unit at IRCM, Dr. Eric Racine, just launched an important book entitled The Theory of Deliberative Wisdom, published by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
A leading ethicist whose reputation extends beyond the borders of Quebec, Dr. Eric Racine proposes an accessible and inspiring model of ethics, which shows not only why ethics is important, but also how it can be used for humanity's well-being.
Humanity is currently facing a multitude of profound challenges: technological advances, environmental changes, growing inequalities and profound social and political pluralism. These transformations raise moral questions including questions about how we perceive ourselves and how we should engage with the world to foster human flourishing. In The Theory of Deliberative Wisdom, Dr. Racine proposes an original interdisciplinary ethical theory that offers both an explanation of how human morality works and a model of an imaginative, deliberative process for addressing moral problems.
The book is available in hard copy and also open access thanks to a new initiative from MIT Press: https://direct.mit.edu/books/oa-monograph/5969/The-Theory-of-Deliberative-Wisdom
Dr. Racine explains the process that led to the writing of this book: "After more than 20 years of interdisciplinary research in ethics and the realization of numerous projects, it seemed increasingly urgent and necessary to consolidate the scientific foundations of ethics in order to offer a promising vision for the future. This book has led me to draw on the resources of disciplines such as neuroscience, psychology, economics, cognitive science and philosophy, in addition to my personal and professional experiences, which are inexhaustible sources of new situations and reflections."
Congratulations to the author!
