A long-standing commitment to human rights and the IRCM
Born and raised in Congo DRC, of Indian and Rwandan descent, Tabasum was trained as a nurse in Burundi, before continuing her studies in Geneva in humanitarian development, gender-based violence and community health. In 2004, she immigrated in Quebec.
She began working at the Institute in 2012 as an administrative assistant and library manager. In 2016, she joined the World Health Organization (WHO), where she worked as a humanitarian expert in public health and health response coordination in several countries in crisis, including Syria, Iraq, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Haiti and Bangladesh. (Health Cluster Coordinator)
In 2022, she returned to Quebec and came back to the Institute, where she currently plays a valuable role in providing administrative support to research.
“Throughout my career, I have developed a dual career path as an administrator in Quebec and as a coordinator of humanitarian response in healthcare. I feel a deep sense of belonging to the IRCM, which is a real melting pot of cultures and nationalities. It's a pleasure for me to overhear conversations in different languages and to feel as if I circled the world in a single day! The Institute plays a major role in advancing treatments and training the next generation of scientists, and I feel privileged to be part of this cosmopolitan and stimulating universe.’’
