Mila et Brian Mulroney
Philantropic Chair
in Diabetes

Established in 2025, through the IRCM Foundation, and with the support of the Honorable Brian Mulroney’s family, among others, the IRCM Mila and Brian Mulroney Philanthropic Chair in Diabetes aims to propel highly promising multidisciplinary and multi-institutional initiatives to help prevent the onset of diabetes, alleviate the individual and social burden of this chronic disease, and ultimately promote a cure.

The Chair focuses on specific forms of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), and rare forms of diabetes, particularly cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD).

The purpose of the Chair:

  • To promote mental and physical health among people living with diabetes and their loved ones  through a multidisciplinary approach that includes training to promote independence and well-being.
  • To support innovative research projects to understand the mechanisms of the disease, enable prevention, facilitate screening, reduce the risk of complications, and enable a cure.
  • To support and to train  the next generation of healthcare professionals and researchers.

Health Research Training

To address the entire continuum of care, research, and teaching, the Chair brings together six teams with complementary and synergistic expertise in medicine, nutrition, kinesiology, and molecular biology. These teams are located at the IRCM, the CHUM, the CIUSSS du Nord-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, the Université de Montréal, and McGill University.

Chair Members

Dr. Yasaman Aghazadeh, Director of the Research Unit in Regenerative Medicine for Diabetes

Yasaman Aghazadeh PhD

Expert in stem cell islet generation for use in type 1 diabetes cell therapies

Dr. Aghazadeh is the Director of the Regenerative Medicine for Diabetes Research Unit at the IRCM, Assistant Professor at the Université de Montréal, and Adjunct Professor at McGill University. She is a stem cell biologist, and her research program is focused on understanding the development of healthy and diseased pancreatic beta cells to improve the efficacy of islet cell therapies for type 1 diabetes.

Anne-Sophie Brazeau, Co-founder of the BETTER project. Expert in nutrition and the implementation of educational and support tools for self-management of type 1 diabetes

Anne-Sophie Brazeau RD, PhD

Co-founder of the BETTER project. Expert in nutrition and the implementation of educational and support tools for self-management of type 1 diabetes

Dr. Brazeau is a Registered Dietician, an Associate Professor and Associate Director at the School of Human Nutrition at McGill University. Her research program is informed by the experience of patients with whom she works in close partnership. It aims to understand the patients’ experience with diabetes self-management, to inform on eating behaviors in type 1 diabetes in the context of current therapies, and to improve access to diabetes education.

Adèle Coriati, Expert in cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD)

Adèle Coriati PhD

Expert in cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD)

Dr. Coriati is a Principal Investigator at the Jean-Jacques-Gauthier Centre of the CIUSSS Nord-de-l’Île-de-Montréal and an Assistant Professor at the Université de Montréal. Her research program focuses on screening, assessing cardiometabolic risks, and treating cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD). She is particularly interested in the aging population and the impacts of groundbreaking treatments, which target the genetic defect underlying cystic fibrosis in CFRD.

Dr. Rémi Rabasa-Lhoret, Director of the Metabolic Diseases Research Unit and the Diabetes Clinic

Rémi Rabasa-Lhoret, MD, PhD

Co-founder of the BETTER project. Endocrinologist and clinician scientist working on type 1 diabetes and diabetes secondary to cystic fibrosis

Dr. Rabasa-Lhoret is an endocrinologist, the Vice-President of Clinic and Clinical Research, and Director of the Diabetes Clinic at the IRCM. He is a professor at the Université de Montréal, affiliated with McGill University, and is the Director of the Professional Council of Diabetes Quebec. His research aims to reduce the burden of type 1 diabetes, develop better tools for management, and understand the causes and consequences of cystic fibrosis-related diabetes.

Nadine Taleb, Endocrinologist and clinician scientist in atypical forms of diabetes including latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA)

Nadine Taleb MD, PhD

Endocrinologist and clinician scientist in atypical forms of diabetes including latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA)

Dr. Taleb is an endocrinologist at the IRCM and CHUM and the director of the CHUM clinic for young adults with type 1 diabetes. She is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Université de Montréal and a researcher at the CHUM. Her research program is focused on characterizing different types of autoimmune diabetes, personalizing care, preserving beta cell function, and improving screening across the spectrum of diabetes subtypes.

Dr. Jane Yardley, Director of the Research Unit in Physical Activity and Diabetes

Jane Yardley PhD

Expert in exercise and women’s health in type 1 diabetes

Dr. Yardley is the director of the Physical Activity and Diabetes Research Unit at the IRCM, Associate Professor at the Université de Montréal, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Alberta and at McGill University. Her research program focuses on the effect of physical exercise on type 1 diabetes, particularly on different aspects of women’s health such as the menstrual cycle, menopause and pregnancy.
