Stealth Biotherapeutics

Founded in 2006, Stealth BioTherapeutics is a biopharmaceutical company born out of the discoveries made by Dr. Peter Scheller at the IRCM. Now in the clinical phase, it is developing therapies targeting mitochondria to treat serious genetic diseases and age-related conditions. Its lead candidate, BendaviaTM, targets conditions such as primary mitochondrial myopathy, Barth syndrome, Leber hereditary optic neuropathy, and age-related macular degeneration. A second molecule, SBT-20, is currently being evaluated for the treatment of peripheral neuropathies. A first successful treatment of a rare eye disease is a concrete illustration of the hope that these therapies bring.

Numbio Therapeutics

Based on discoveries made by Dr. Michel Cayouette and published in 2022, Numbio Therapeutics was founded in 2024 with the support of the IRCM’s Technology Transfer Office. This young biotechnology company, specializing in ophthalmology, is developing an innovative gene therapy targeting neurodegeneration caused by glaucoma. By focusing on modulating the Numb protein to reduce toxic levels of Tau in retinal ganglion cells, Numbio is paving the way for a unique approach capable of preserving vision and slowing the progression of the disease.

Liphorus

Liphorus Pharmaceuticals was founded in 2013 on the basis of Dr. Nabil G. Seidah's major discoveries at the IRCM, including the identification of the PCSK9 gene in 2002 and the development of an innovative approach to the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Unlike injectable monoclonal antibodies that target circulating PCSK9, the technology developed at the IRCM acts within the cells themselves, paving the way for more accessible oral treatments that are likely to improve therapeutic adherence. In 2014, Liphorus successfully raised $6.4 million USD in Series A financing, solidifying its position on the international biotechnology scene.

Peiman Shooshtarizadeh has been contributing to the life sciences research and innovation ecosystem for over ten years, working at the interface between academic research, commercialization, and the development of innovations with clinical and societal impact. A scientist by training, he holds a PhD in immunology and an MBA, giving him dual scientific and strategic expertise.

After a career in academic research, particularly in life sciences and emerging technologies, he shifted his focus to research commercialization, technology transfer, and the marketing of innovations from the academic world. He has supported numerous projects involving technology maturation, intellectual property protection, and the creation of partnerships between researchers, institutions, and industrial players, both in Quebec and internationally.

As Director of Valorization and Commercialization at the IRCM, his mandate is to maximize the impact of scientific discoveries by supporting their translation into clinical, industrial, and entrepreneurial applications. He actively contributes to the development of valorization strategies, the creation of research-based start-ups, and the promotion of the IRCM's expertise within the innovation ecosystem.

Nadia Dubé

Nadia Dubé has been contributing to the life sciences research and innovation ecosystem for many years and has accumulated years of research experience in various sub-sectors. A scientist by training, she holds a PhD in biochemistry from McGill University and a dual Executive MBA from Paris-Dauphine University and ESG-UQAM. In 2017, she began a non-academic career in business development at Mitacs, a national non-profit research organization, where she created research partnerships between academia and industry. She then focused on life sciences at the Quebec Consortium for Biopharmaceutical Research (CQDM) as Senior Director of Communications and Business Development. In 2021, she joined Investissement Québec's foreign direct investment team as Senior Project Director for the life sciences and health technologies sector, with a mandate to attract foreign investment to the sector in Quebec and contribute to the development of strategic industrial projects. Dr. Dubé was appointed Vice President of Development and Administration at the IRCM in January 2023.
