Abstract:
Exercise is essential for the health and wellbeing of individuals with type 1 diabetes, however fear of hypoglycemia acts as a major barrier to being more active for this population. Historically, advice for hypoglycemia avoidance has been very vague, and has left a great deal of trial and error up to the participant. Past studies of the glycemic effects of exercise often recruited only male participants, and focussed on aerobic exercise. Since undertaking my PhD at the University of Ottawa, my research has focused on fine-tuning exercise safety recommendations for this population by examining the impacts of different types and timings of exercise on blood glucose levels in individuals with type 1 diabetes. I have also been working on elaborating how different physiological characteristics, such as age and sex, may play a mediating role on blood glucose responses. In this presentation I will discuss our progress in moving towards more precise safety advice for individuals with type 1 diabetes based on the type, timing and intensity of exercise, as well as the physiological characteristics of the person performing it.
