The very first edition of the Cours francophone de microscopie optique (CFMO) - Montréal was held mainly at the IRCM last week, from May 12 to 16, 2025, and proved a resounding success.
Offered in French by microscopy experts from several Canadian universities, including the IRCM Microscopy Core Facility team, the training attracted over 50 professionals from ten institutions and research centres of Quebec and the rest of Canada (CHU-Ste-Justine, CRCHUM, Université de Sherbrooke, IRCM, Douglas Institute, Université de Montréal, INRS, McGill University, University of Manitoba, University of Ottawa), as well as exceptional sponsors such as Quorum Technologies, Zeiss, Leica-VWR and ThermoFisher.
Participants had the opportunity to learn more about the theoretical basis of microscope imaging, contrast techniques and widefield/confocal microscopy. In addition, attendees were able to deepen their basic understanding of image analysis and sample preparation, as well as hone their skills in presenting results and publication ethics.
"Quality microscopy is essential in research, and holding this training course is an excellent opportunity for us, at the IRCM Microscopy Core Facility, to share our knowledge and expertise with colleagues from other research institutions. We were delighted to see the enthusiasm of the participants throughout this first edition, which I hope is the start of a tradition," says Dominic Filion, Director of the IRCM Microscopy Core Facility.
