The IRCM launches FEDERATE Can, an innovative research initiative for the early screening of type 1 diabetes in Canada

The Montreal Clinical Research Institute (IRCM) announces the launch of FEDERATE-Can, a novel research project aimed at transforming the screening of type 1 diabetes in Canada. Led by a multidisciplinary IRCM team, under the direction of Dr. Rémi Rabasa Lhoret, this innovative initiative is intended for family members of people living with type 1 diabetes, a population at increased risk of developing the disease.

The program’s objective is to recruit up to 1,000 participants in order to detect disease markers earlier—sometimes well before the onset of symptoms—thereby paving the way for proactive and personalized management of a condition with significant consequences for those affected. Initially deployed at the IRCM, the project ultimately aims to expand to multiple collaborating centers across the country, positioning Montreal as a driving hub for this public health advancement.

FEDERATE Can embodies the vision we champion at the IRCM: bold, innovative, forward looking research with real impact on population health,” emphasizes Dr. Jean François Côté, President and Scientific Director of the IRCM. “By focusing on early screening, prevention, and public engagement, this project illustrates our commitment to advancing medicine toward proactive and preventive approaches, while training the next generation of scientists and clinicians.”
FEDERATE Can perfectly illustrates a research approach that is proactive rather than reactive, and that leverages innovation to tangibly improve the life course of individuals and families affected by diabetes,” adds Dr. Rémi Rabasa Lhoret, Principal Investigator of the project. “By combining clinical expertise, cutting edge research, and public accessibility, we are taking an important step toward a more preventive and more humane form of medicine.”

A Public Focused Approach
The FEDERATE Can project also stands out for its strong public oriented approach. A dedicated website will allow eligible individuals to learn about type 1 diabetes, to understand the importance of screening, to verify their eligibility, and to easily book an appointment. Simplified scientific content and a blog will further support this health education effort, in line with the IRCM’s commitment to knowledge transfer and patient empowerment.

A Multidisciplinary Team
An investigator initiated study financially supported by Sanofi, FEDERATE Can brings together a team of researchers, research nurses, and coordination professionals, embodying the IRCM’s integrated model in which basic research, clinical research, and specialized care mutually reinforce one another. The project was designed by Dr. Maha Lebbar, an MD and doctoral student at the IRCM, whose expertise helped shape the project’s innovative approach.

Through this initiative, the IRCM reaffirms its role as a leader in health innovation, its strong roots in Montreal, and its commitment to developing concrete, collaborative, and forward looking solutions to address the major health challenges facing our society.
