Study aiming at uncovering which type of fish oil best reduce risk factors for type 2 diabetes in high-risk people living with overweight or obesity

The IRCM Clinic is inviting adult Canadians to take part in an academic research study comparing the effectiveness of two types of fish oils, called EPA and DHA, on reducing metabolic anomalies that promote type 2 diabetes in high-risk people living with overweight or obesity.

Why participate?
By taking part in this study, you will gain valuable insight into your health.
You will receive information regarding key health indicators, including risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease. You will also receive the results of your initial blood tests, body composition (fat and muscle percentage), dietary assessment, and physical activity levels. Ultimately, your participation will contribute to invaluable medical research aimed at improving prevention strategies for type 2 diabetes and related chronic diseases.

What does participation involve?
Your participation will last about 3 months. You will be asked to take one of three types of softgels containing EPA, DHA or corn oil (placebo without EPA and DHA). You will also be asked to visit the IRCM clinic 6 times, including two 7-hours days and two 3-hour days. These visits are needed to evaluate your eligibility to be included in this study and to undergo the specialized metabolic testing.

Who can take part?
You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:

  • Are a man or a woman post menopause aged 40–70 years
  • Do not smoke
  • Have not been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or heart disease
  • Are not taking medication for blood pressure, heart disease or cholesterol
  • Are available for all study visits

About the research team
The study is led by Dr. May Faraj, Professor of Nutrition at the Université de Montréal and Director of the Research Unit on Nutrition, Lipoproteins, and Cardiometabolic Diseases at the IRCM.

The study is supported by Diabetes Canada, a national charity dedicated to preventing diabetes, supporting people living with diabetes, and funding research to improve treatments and work toward a cure. This study is approved by Health Canada and is registered online at https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT07575438.
