About the conference:
Cardiovascular disease is the first cause of death in the world, with atherosclerosis being the underlying cause of the majority of cardiovascular events. Atherosclerosis has a strong immune component. However, our understanding on the antigens that trigger the atherosclerosis immune response is very limited. We have performed an unprecedented screening of atherosclerosis-associated antibodies (AAAbs) by single cell sequencing and expression of antibody genes. We identified 18 AAAbs that recognize the atherosclerotic plaque. We further uncovered that the specific antigen for one such AAAb, called A12, is the ALDH4A1 self-protein. Importantly, plasma levels of ALDH4A1 are increased in atherosclerotic mice and humans. Moreover, A12 infusion delays plaque progression in atherosclerotic mice. Thus, our work provides new candidates for the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

About Almudena R. Ramiro:
Dr. Almudena R. Ramiro is a professor at the Spanish National Center for Cardiovascular Research in Madrid, where she studies B-cell biology and antibody immune responses. Her latest work has focused on antigens and microRNAs that affect cardiovascular health. Dr. Ramiro’s research is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and the “La Caixa” Foundation. She is the recipient of the 2021 Caja Rural de Granada Award for Health Sciences Research and has been actively involved since 2009 in the Biomedicine and the Fundamental Biology study sections of the Ministry. Dr. Ramiro has published in the most prestigious scientific journals, including Nature, Immunity, Blood, and Trends in Immunology.
