Faces of the IRCM – Joe Di Domenico

Joe Di Domenico
When Service Comes with a Smile

NB: This series of encounters highlights the diversity of the members of the IRCM community, the variety of their expertise and the depth of their commitment to their respective roles

Our colleagues in the Security Service are an integral part of daily life at the IRCM. They help ensure that research and patient care can take place in a safe and secure environment, making their role essential to the Institute’s mission. They are also dedicated and approachable people with whom many of us develop warm and familiar relationships, proving that professionalism and humanity can go hand in hand.

Among them, Joe Di Domenico is a well-known face who has been looking after the IRCM and its community for more than a dozen years. As he prepares to retire and head off to sunnier skies, Joe explains that he has spent the last several years welcoming visitors at the reception desk of 110 Pine Avenue West.

What truly stands out about Joe is his humility. Even when reminded the much-appreciated figure he has become within the IRCM community, he quickly brings the conversation back to his commitment to service. His philosophy is simple: welcoming people, helping them, and treating them with respect.

In many ways, Joe serves as the public face of the IRCM, since he is often the first person visitors meet when they enter the facility.
It is a role that is both rewarding and demanding, and one that Joe embraces wholeheartedly:

“My role is first and foremost to greet people with a smile and be of service to them. I always try to meet their needs and be there for them every day.”

Joe is also quick to recognize his colleagues at the Security Service, whose teamwork and communication help ensure that emerging issues never escalate into major problems.

“Communication is essential in our work. When information flows well, everyone can do their job better. I’ve been fortunate to work with an excellent security team. We support one another, share information, and look out for each other.”

As he prepares to close this chapter and begin a new one, Joe does so with gratitude and peace of mind:

“What has stayed with me most is the atmosphere here. People are friendly, respectful, and kind. It’s been a great place to work, and that has meant a lot to me. I’m grateful to the Institute for giving me this opportunity. Of course, I’ll miss it, and I hope the community will miss me a little too.”

Without a doubt, Joe, you will be missed. And there is every reason to believe that your dedication, professionalism, and spirit of service will live on through the many people you have mentored and inspired over the years. We wish you all the very best in this well-deserved retirement!
