Élie Lambert, PhD candidate in Molecular Biology
At the crossroads of research and therapeutic applications
NB: This series of encounters highlights the diversity of the members of the IRCM community, the variety of their expertise and the depth of their commitment to their respective roles
At 33, Élie Lambert embodies a new generation of scientists eager to see their discoveries move beyond the laboratory and reach their full potential—ultimately benefiting patients. For the past few weeks, he has been completing a part-time internship at the IRCM’s Commercialization and Knowledge Transfer Office under the supervision of Peiman Shooshtarizadeh. Spanning six months, the internship runs alongside the final stages of his PhD—making for a busy summer, but one that is both stimulating and highly formative.
Under the supervision of Dr. François Robert, Élie is completing a PhD in molecular biology focused on transcription mechanisms involving RNA polymerase II and its coactivator Mediator. He previously earned a master’s degree in cell biology from Sherbrooke and a bachelor’s degree in pharmacology, with a strong interest in therapeutic development. This rigorous scientific background now finds a natural extension in the field of research valuation, at the interface between fundamental science and real-world applications.
Within the knowledge transfer office, Élie actively contributes to several stages of the valorization process. Working alongside his supervisor, he participates in the evaluation of new discoveries, the analysis of intellectual property and commercialization potential, and strategic planning with researchers. His day-to-day work is varied and engaging, bringing him into contact with a range of partners—patent agents, legal experts, investors, and consultants—who play a role in the technology transfer ecosystem.
“As a student, I had little exposure to this whole dimension of research valuation. Discovering the breadth of active projects and the dynamic ‘behind-the-scenes’ environment at IRCM is incredibly motivating.”
This internship represents an ideal transition between academia and alternative career paths. Thanks to a flexible structure, Élie is able to balance the demands of writing and defending his thesis with hands-on experience in a new professional setting. He also highlights the attentive guidance of his supervisor, who ensures that the internship assignments align with his career goals.
“This internship allows me to position myself precisely at the interface between fundamental research and its concrete applications, contributing to the transformation of discoveries into innovations with therapeutic potential.”
The experience also provides insight into a less visible—but essential—aspect of research: the richness of ongoing projects at IRCM and their strong translational potential.
Behind the scenes lies a dynamic ecosystem where research valuation serves as a powerful lever to amplify the impact of scientific discoveries.
By helping promote a culture where valuation is integrated from the very inception of research projects, interns like Élie actively contribute to IRCM’s mission: transforming knowledge into innovations that advance healing for society.
