On Wednesday, April 19, the IRCM internal Science POP competition took place at the Institute's auditorium in a joyful atmosphere.

For the IRCM, as the instigator of this science popularization competition which became provincial in 2023, this moment quite significant. It is even with great excitement that the IRCM community gathered, for one day, to launch these scientific popularization contests, in order to select those who will represent the Institute at the provincial competition on May 27 and 28.

In front of a captive audience of more than 80 people, and more than 20 online, the competitors of the popularization, mobilization and valorization challenges were able to feel first-hand the support and pride of the Institute's members, whether experienced and budding scientists, employees, volunteers or various partners.

From cancer and diabetes to microbiota, RNA, fitness, ecology and wellness in science, the day's presentations were unique, fun and often humorous, with the audience watching in awe, amusement and interest.

“I was asked to participate in the event as a jury member, which I accepted with great pleasure! It was very rewarding," said Josée Leclerc, Digital Communications Advisor at IRCM.

For their part, the 19 competitors of the three challenges, all from the great diversity of the IRCM student community, revealed little-known facets of their personalities, unsuspected talents and a definite passion for science, in an atmosphere marked by joy and good humour.

One can therefore only imagine how difficult a task it was for the members of the three juries when it came time to select the following IRCM finalists:

Popularization Challenge
- 1st prize: Myriam Beaudry, PhD student under the supervision of Dr. May Faraj
- 2nd prize: Johanna Guerry, PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Javier Di Noia and Laure Monteillet, postdoctoral fellow under the supervision of Dr. Jennifer Estall
- People's Choice: Fatima Kassem, PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Michel Cayouette

Mobilization Challenge
- 1st prize: Yiran Chen, master's student and Easin Uddin Syed, PhD student, under the supervision of Dr. Éric Lecuyer
- 2nd prize: James Eng, PhD student, under the supervision of Dr. Jennifer Estall
- People's Choice: Rachelle Sauvé, PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Frédéric Charron and Chloé Apcher, PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Jean-François Côté.

Valorization Challenge
- 1st prize and People's Choice: Sophie Ehresmann, PhD student, under the supervision of Dr. Martin Sauvageau
- 2nd prize: Benjamin Ouimet, PhD student under the supervision of Dr. May Faraj

“Once again, Science POP has demonstrated how much a place of cutting-edge science, talent and passion the IRCM is. We are very proud of our students”, said Nadia Dubé, Vice President, Development and Administration at IRCM.

It is with great pride and confidence that the Institute is heading towards the grand final of Science POP where finalists from 15 research institutions in Québec will compete to determine the provincial winners of the 2023 edition of Science POP.
